Chapter 19

If I ever go missing, follow my kid. He can find me no matter where I try to hide.

When we walk into the hotel where the wedding reception is taking place, my mouth drops open at the vision in front of me. “Wow,” is all I can say. I’ve never been in a hotel with marble floors, painted murals on the ceiling, and a doorman in the lobby before.

Max entwines his hand with mine and leads me to the ballroom. I look around the place, but I’m not seeing the flowers and balloons. I’m searching for Ollie.

I tug on Max’s hand when he directs us to our table. “I need to speak to Ollie first.”

He changes directions, and we head to the table with his brothers. As expected, they’ve got the cards out and are showing Ollie how to play poker. I groan. Isn’t he a bit young for poker?

“Ollie,” I call when we’re close to the table.

“Hi, Ma,” he answers without looking up from his cards.

“We need to have a word.”

He waves a hand in my direction. “Behave, listen to what my elders tell me, and don’t drink the adult punch. Got it.”

Max chuckles until I elbow him in the gut. “Shut it.” He clears his throat, but I can see the mirth lingering in his eyes.

“We need to talk,” I insist.

“What about this time, Ma?”

I cross my arms over my chest. “How about why you lied to me before we left the house today?”

“I didn’t lie,” he says and coughs. Gotcha!

“Tell it to another mother.”

“Do we have to do this now?” he whines.

“Do you want me to air all your dirty laundry in front of your new friends?”

Lenny, Wally, Sid, and Barney fold their cards on the table. “Better listen to your mom, kid,” Wally says.

Ollie jumps to his feet and marches out of the room. I pray for patience before following him. Teenage temper tantrum here we come.

He stops in the hallway and whirls around to face me. “What? Do you have to embarrass me in front of everyone? I wasn’t doing anything wrong!”

I let him flail about for a minute. This isn’t my first rodeo. I know better than to interrupt a temper tantrum.

“Tell me what you lied about. Promise you’ll behave. And then we’re done here,” I explain once he runs out of steam.

“I didn’t lie,” he says and coughs.

“Son,” Max says, and I startle. I didn’t realize he’d followed us into the hallway. “You need to work on your tell or my brothers are going to annihilate you in poker.”

“My tell?”

“It’s how your mom knows you’re lying.”

I elbow him. “I know he’s lying because my superpower is being a mom.” The last thing I need is Ollie figuring out his tell.

“Of course,” Max concedes.

“Come on, Ollie. Tell me why you lied about being fine with Max and I dating.” Next to me, I feel Max stiffen, but I ignore him to concentrate on my son who’s blushing and looking at the carpet as if it’s the most fascinating thing he’s seen in his fifteen years on this earth.
